Off to La Selva!

Today we end our time in Cuerici and make our way to La Selva Biological Station. We began our day with one last delicious breakfast at the Estacion Biologica de Cuerici before hitting the road.

On the way to La Selva, we climb to higher elevation to learn about the Paramo. Our climbing instructor, Jeremy, provides us with interesting background information about this important alpine bog ecosystem's background, importance, and the ongoing research taking place. Along the way to La Selva as elevation declines, the change in vegetation, temperature, and humidity is evident.

We arrive at La Selva in time for lunch, followed by a tour of the grounds. During our tour, we observe the incredible flora and fauna along the trails. Many of us were particularly thrilled at a chance sighting of two sleeping bats under a large folded palm leaf! After the tour, Cat leads us to some potential climbing trees off the CES trail, all the while pointing out crucial information about the epiphytes, environment, research methods, and safety. As we end our first day, there are feelings of anticipation and excitement for what lies in wait for us during the final chapter of our canopy course.
